Gerina attended Goddard High School. In the high school level, she was able to win her first prize in the New Mexico state golf tournament. She was also an athlete in volleyball who played at the national level. She went to in the University of Texas in 2003. She took home all the events she took part in throughout her final years. In her undergraduate seasons, she won Conference USA's individual player of year, as well as UTEP's Female Athletic of the Year.
